How to pass the Vermont knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Vermont manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Vermont law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Vermont written test format

Test Questions Pass mark Minimum age
Car 20 16 correct (4 mistakes allowed) 15 years
Motorcycle 20 16 correct (4 mistakes allowed) 16 years
CDL 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 18 years

Car. The learner permit knowledge test is taken online and has 20 multiple choice questions with four answers each. At least 16 correct answers are needed and a failed attempt requires waiting at least one day.

Motorcycle. A motorcycle learner permit requires either the online motorcycle learner permit test or a four hour Vermont Motorcycle Awareness Program course. The DMV does not publish the question count for the motorcycle test, so the figures shown mirror the published car permit test format and are not confirmed.

CDL. Applicants must be 18 for a commercial learner permit and intrastate driving, and 21 for interstate driving. The Vermont CDL manual does not publish the number of general knowledge questions, so the figures shown follow the common federal 80 percent standard and are not confirmed.
